About the Peace Camp
The CAMP
About 20 metres from the archway at the entrance of Shannon airport, to the left of the roundabout. The camp is growing day by day and is occupied 24 hours a day.
There is currently one caravan, and a few tents, and lots of banners and determination.
The purpose of the camp is on-site monitoring of the airport, providing information to the public and maintaining a high-visibility protest to the use of the airport for military purposes. The camp is sustained by volunteers, and needs lots of people to give time and effort to keep it going so please lend a hand.
The HOUSE
The house is the support base for people using the camp to monitor and vigil. We supply hot food, banner making material, as well as a place for people to rest when they need a break from the camp. The house is also the main contact point for the media as well as legal queries.
People rotate between the house and the camp, so the house is also sustained by volunteers providing time, effort, food and equipment. Please contact the house if you wish to help out.
Please note that the house and camp are drug and alcohol free zones and that we are commited to principles of non-violent action.
WHO WE ARE
We are a bunch of concerned people from different backgrounds who share common beliefs:
-That we should not allow the US military machine to commit mass murder
-That our Government should not allow our civilian airports and neutral territory and airspace to be used in an unjust war, and without the consultation or consent of the people or the DailWe are NOT a political party, or a religious organisation. We are volunteers who have come together for our cause. We're not "hippies", anti-American, terrorist-sympathisers, or malcontents. We give up time from friends, family, and fun because we believe in what we are doing.
WHY WE ARE HERE
Shannon airport has been stealthily transformed into a low-cost unofficial airbase for the US military. Monitoring of this situation began in late 2001, following the awful mass murder of thousands of innocent people in the 9-11 attacks. We realised that the Bush administration was going to do to the innocent people of Afghanistan what Al Qaeda had done in New York - Savage, indiscriminate, collective, and brutal punishment inflicted on the population for the sins of a few militants.
On September 11th 2001, a small bunch of criminal fanatics killed almost 3,000 innocent people in the United States. These people had nothing to do with the reasons cited for the attacks, (alleged crimes of the United States government and military). There is no justification for killing them, and those responsible for their deaths should be brought to justice.
On October 7th, 2001, the armed forces of the United States of America (under the direction of G.W. Bush the Commander- in-Chief,) began a bloody and brutal bombing campaign in Afghanistan. At least 3,000 innocent Afghan men, women and children have perished directly in the bombing, with many others dying from cold or starvation while fleeing the B-52s and F-16s. These people had nothing to do with the reasons cited for the attacks, (The 9-11 attacks by SAUDI fanatics loyal to Osama Bin Laden). There is no justification for killing them, and those responsible for their deaths should be brought to justice.
The Irish people condemned the 9-11 attacks and did not give assistance in carrying them out. Equally, a great many of us condemn the attacks on the innocent people of Afghanistan, and Iraq. We should give no assistance or facilitation of these attacks by the US military. Unfortunately, our Government has made that decision for us, without consulting the Dail as required in article 28 of the Constitution, and without properly informing or consulting the people of Ireland.
We are hear to inform the Irish people about what is happening in Shannon airport and what it means for us, for innocent human beings in other countries, for our neutrality and the rule of law in this country.
The government is operating outside of its powers and against the will of the people. We must oppose the use of Shannon on moral, legal and safety grounds.
Moral
As stated above, the airport is being used by the armed forces of a nation engaged in a bloody campaign against an impoverished and undefended country.
The vast majority of casualties have been civilians, while the stated targets, (Osama and his evil psychos) have not been hunted down.It is WRONG to carpet bomb civilians.Justice cannot be dispensed by a B-52 bomber.Ireland has a proud history of peace-keeping in the Third World, we should not now be complicit in the murder of so many people in a region where we were respected for our stand against imperialism and unjust wars.
Legal:
There are many legal reasons why we cannot legally allow the use of Shannon airport. The Irish Constitution states in the listed articles that :
28.3.1° War shall not be declared and the State shall not participate in any war save with the assent of Dáil Éireann.
29.1 Ireland affirms its devotion to the ideal of peace and friendly co-operation amongst nations founded on international justice and morality.
29.2 Ireland affirms its adherence to the principle of the pacific settlement of international disputes by international arbitration or judicial determination.
International Law, also binding in Ireland provides many international conventions which prohibit the indiscriminate use of force against civilians, the destruction of civilian property and the use of hunger as a weapon. [>

Hague, Geneva, Nuremberg Charter]In relation to the use of neutral countries Article 5 of the Hague Convention (V) Respecting the Rights and Duties of Neutral Powers and Persons in Case of War on Land "A neutral Power must not allow any of the acts referred to in Articles 2 to 4 to occur on its territory." Article 2 states "Belligerents are forbidden to move troops or convoys of either munitions of war or supplies across the territory of a neutral Power".
Safety
Shannon is not a military airport. It is an international civilian airport, and quite a good one. It is not suitable for military operations nor is it guarded by the military against the enemies of any such military force. By using Shannon for military operations, the US administration, with the collusion of our government have put the people of Shannon and the users of the airport at increased risk from terrorist attack.

A few days before his assassination, Dr Martin Luther King delivered his last sermon:
"It is no longer a choice, my friends, between violence and non-violence. It is either non-violence or non-existence. This is why I felt the need of raising my voice against that war and working wherever I can to arouse the conscience of our nation."

Statement on Direct Action at Shannon Airport
The Shannon Peace Camp was established to highlight the use of our civilian airport, Shannon Airport, by the U.S. military in their preparations for a war that will result in the killing of many thousands of innocent people. A US led war on Iraq is unjustified, immoral and contravenes International law, including the United Nations Charter.
We have been and continue to be successful in our endeavours to publicise the use of our airport for this war. The efforts by the Irish government to hide this activity have been exposed. The Irish people are now aware that thousands of weapons, soldiers, and military planes move thru our airport on a daily basis in preparation for a deadly war. We call on the Irish government to immediately end the use of our airport for these immoral activities.

Galway Advertiser speaks to Iraqi woman
BY KERNAN ANDREWS, Galway Advertiser
As the threat of war looms on Iraq, attention is focused on George W Bush, Sadaam Hussein, and the attitudes of the Left and Right. If, or when, the conflict begins, the real casualties will be the Iraqi people, so often ignored in these ideological battles war breeds. A number of Iraqis live in Galway, and one of them, Nuria Mustafa Dunne, has been speaking to The Galway Advertiser, about why Iraqis cannot trust Sadaam or the USA, and why war is not the answer to the country's problems.

US Military plane disarmed again! 5 members of Catholic Worker arrested
Indymedia
reports that in the early hours of Monday 03 February, five members of the pacifist Catholic Worker movement cut their way into Shannon Airport.
full story at
Indymedia
Update:
Despite the media giving space to reports of a Garda being assaulted or overpowered, this was refuted by the protestors themselves.
Ciaron O'Reilly, one of the Catholic Worker activists arrested, said today that they had indeed met a Garda who, rather than being overpowered, had had a kind of stress/panic reaction to their presence and had become upset. According to Ciaron the Garda was concerned with his job and with the reaction of his superiors. Ciaran made it clear that at no point had the Catholic Worker activists approached, attacked or restrained the Garda and that he was their arresting officer. Ciaran is further reported as saying that the five Catholic Worker protesters were themselves upset by the Garda's reaction and had attempted to comfort and reassure him.

Galway City Council adopts anti-war stance
Galway City Council last night unanimously passed an anti-war resolution, which was proposed by Alderman Catherine Connolly of Labour.
The resolution was raised 'in solidarity' with Galway's twin cities, Seattle and Chicago, both of whose councils have adopted anti-war positions. Alderman Connolly urged her colleagues to show leadership on the issue, "especially when Shannon is in the next county to us".

Cowens security reasons whitewash says Tim Hourigan
Anonymous writes:
"Dear Sir/Madam,
The Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Cowen, says that for security reasons we cannot give the destinations of the many military flights leaving
Shannon on a daily basis.
This is complete whitewash.
The pro-war media in the states has a lot of PR stories about troops and the anecdotes of their trips."
